“I am a UAV Pilot in Canada. Our company is in the wildland firefighting business, and I fly over the fires checking firelines and looking for hotspots. We store and transport our UAV and its cameras in an SKB case with custom cutouts. In August 2018 we were hiking through an active forest fire when a burnt tree fell across our path. While lifting our UAV over the tree, a hand slipped and the cased aircraft went on its own trip; sliding, tumbling and bouncing about 400 feet downhill.
My heart was in my throat. We walked down to it and I fully expected to have a big box full of broken parts. I was astonished when I opened it; nothing out of place, nothing broken or cracked...there wasn’t even any dust inside! The rest of our hike we carried the case when we could; if we couldn’t it was pushed and slid. Upon reaching our location I opened it again, still nothing damaged, and still no dust.
This case has never been treated very gently; it’s tossed into and out of vehicles, moved over all sorts of terrain, and now this excursion...I’ve developed an absolute faith that this case will withstand whatever I might throw at it.
Thank you! I can’t tell you how important it is for us, knowing that, of all the things we have to think about during a wildfire response, worrying about our equipment is no longer one of them.”
